LG Display’s new three trademarks XµLED,
SµLED, and XLµLED could be Micro-LED related.
According to the media, in early 2018 LG
Display announced that they are developing Micro-LED displays for their large-area
TVs at first. It is now revealed that LGD filed for three new trademarks in the
EU, and all three seem to be related to microLEDs: XµLED, SµLED, and XLµLED.
Features such as high resolution and power
saving capability make Micro LED suited for displays of wearable devices,
head-up displays (HUDs), and head-mounted displays (HMDs).
In its filing, LGD says that these trademarks
will primarily be used for smartphones, but the trademarks could also be
applied to laptops, tablets, wearables and VR glasses. Interestingly LGD did
not say it could be applied to TVs or large-area displays, which will probably
be LGD's first Micro-LED application, so it's not really clear what these
trademarks really mean.
In any case, LGD will reveal its first
large-area Micro-LED TV in September 2018, at least that is the company's goal.
LG Display and LG Electronics filed over 60 Micro-LED patents in Korea in the
last 10 years.
In January, Samsung also filed a trademark
application regarding the development of Micro LED with the Korean Intellectual
Property Office. It launched The Wall, the 146” Micro LED modular TV, at CES
2018.
Apple also reportedly plans to replace OLED
with Micro LED as the display material of its wearable devices. It is estimated
that LG Display will suffer a loss of KRW 230 billion (approximately USD 218
million) if Apple Watch changes its OLED display with a Micro LED display, a
Japanese press source reported.
